400 Tree Seedlings for Rye

Help us plant 400 trees to benefit Rye’s land, air, water and community.

On May 6th, we will be giving out FREE bare root seedlings at the Library Common. Potting materials will be provided. To receive a seedling, please reserve one in advance. To do so, review the seedling options and click on the link below to fill out a form to add your name to the list of recipients.

We thank Rye 400 and the driftwood club for helping us to disseminate 400 trees for Rye’s land, air, water and community.

WHITE SPRUCE, Picea glauca – Hardy, symmetrical and naturally foliage. Often used as a Christmas tree, or landscape tree, it is also planted for timber. Useful for erosion control and site reclamation. Needles are 1/2 to 1 inch, blue-green, angled, and sharp tipped. It is adaptable to a wide range of planting sites but prefers moderately well to well-drained loamy soils. Grows well throughout NH. Seedling height: 8-16 inches. Mature height to 70 feet.

SILVER MAPLE, Acer saccharinum – A fast-growing shade tree, locally common in bottomlands along larger rivers in the northeast; well adapted to wet sites. Also known as soft, white or river maple. Seedling height: 6-12 inches. Mature height: 60-80 feet.


RED OAK, Quercus rubra – A large tree producing some of the most valuable hardwood lumber in the northeast. Prefers fertile, well-drained soils from central NH southward. Oak acorns are a valuable source of winter food and eaten by deer, bear, turkeys and squirrels. Seedling height: 5-10 inches. Mature height: 70-80 feet.
